Fuhball!

1) AFC... the time has come for you to shit your pants.  They're healthy, and they're ready to rock.

2) Peyton Manning!  Your suspension... continues!  OK, so it's one game.  But let's not split hairs... they almost came back, but blew it.  An 83 yard play to ice the game?  As Ron Burgundy would say, that's bush.  And a Manning interception on their final drive?  Same old Colts: can't come back.  Let the Peyton jokes resume!  Hahahahahahahaha

3) The Redskins are back from the grave.  Beat... That... Ass.  Way to go.  Please save us from the friggin Vikings, Falcons, and Cowboys.

  • 2) Jeff, really? I mean, obviously you're in a position to trash talk Peyton all you want, your boys have earned it, and so has he. But you're going to use this as evidence he can't lead comebacks? Need I remind you of this:

    or these:

    Or really, even this one:

It didn't result in a win, but it was one of the most exciting comebacks I've ever seen, and its eventual failure can't really be blamed on him. And that's not counting the insane comebacks in 2001 that made me a Colts fan to begin with.

He's stunk in the postseason, and he's choked under the pressure, and it seems like he can't play in the snow. And in all of those circumstances he failed to lead a come back, by definition, but that is true of every loss in football (or any other sport). Saying he can't come back generally is putting something entirely else into the equation that doesn't fit.

And using a failure to go 14-0 against a team that desperately needed a win to get into the playoffs, and particularly a time when the Colts managed only 25 rushing yards, that's just weak.

  • Clarification:

I do not use this game as evidence that Peyton chokes. I use it as evidence that this year isn't any different than other years, and those years have all ended with Peyton throwing a dumb INT, undoing one half of his chinstrap, and looking for someone else he can blame. The Haterade-laced accusation is implicit, not explicit.

I was in full "give Peyton his due" mode after the Pats game, and simply having lost does not nullify that. They didn't lose because Peyton choked... they lost because of shitty defense. What nullifies it for me is the INT. It was vintage Peyton. Gotta make something happen. Let 'er rip. It struck a chord, because I've seen it before. Of course, I had also seen the 0-3 ALCS deficit before, so maybe it doesn't mean anything. (I am required by law to acknowledge that.)

As for the 29 yards rushing... how has the Pats' running game been this season? Not so good until recently. Yet Tom Brady still managed to win a game or two without a running game. Why do you suppose that is?

  • Fair enough. I didn't get to see the game so I can't really comment on the nature of it, just hope that either it's not true or he learns from it.

Brady is a good quarterback, and he might have a leveler head than Peyton. But if the two switched places, you'd still have 3 superbowl rings, assuming that practice would help with the playing in the snow thing. The difference has been the defense. And Brady's given some games away in his day, including very nearly that win in RCA last year. He was absolutely terrible in the second half. Any other defense, Colts win that game.

And, as for your last comment, eh. It's not like Peyton hasn't won plenty of games with crappy rushing performances. That game was all about the Chargers needing it way, way more. I don't take anything from it at all, except that I'm willing to consider your estimation of Peyton late-game mindset as likely accurate, which is a little worrisome. I don't know, maybe it's bad that playing for history wasn't able to motivate them equally, or that they failed even being so motivated, but I can't see it really indicating too much one way or the other.

  • Correction, that win in RCA two years ago.

  • Also, that whole looking around for someone else to blame thing...I read Simmons saying that shit all the time, but I've never really seen him not take responsibility for his mistakes. Has he had negative post-game interviews or anything? Or is it just all over his face that he wants to blame somebody else for it? Is he somehow less humbly spoken than other NFL quarterbacks? What's he going to do, talk about how it's all his fault and he let his team down and all that? I don't see the point.

I think Simmons' hate for Peyton is all based on him supposedly valuing the regular season records over a championship, which I think is bunk, and the fact that everyone thinks he's better than Brady. Which he may be. It's like Yankee fans 4 years ago all saying "look at the rings" as their argument for why Jeter is a better SS than Nomar or A-Rod. A team is a team and Brady's gotten his due. We'll never know what would happen if they had the same defenses behind them anyway.

I'm not necessarily importing that to you, because I know you're smarter than that. I expect there's a decent reason you don't like Peyton. Hell, I suspect there's a decent reason I shouldn't like Peyton. But I don't see any evidence he thinks or tries to act like those losses haven't been his fault.
