  • Hey, if Meche puts it together this year I'll be happy for him and the Royals. He's had a few good starts in the past though...

Which I suspect is your point. But if you're trying to make me think about how one start doesn't mean Felix is going to tear everyone up all year, well, my optimism is still pretty tentative. I'm still going to keep enjoying the hell out of last night though.

I mean, do you know the last time someone struck out 12 without allowing a run on opening day?

  • No, nothing like that. I just thought we were trading stat lines. And since I'm apparently the resident Gil Meche Superfan #55 around here, I threw his yeoman's work yesterday into the fray.

  • Wow, that's some vitriol I was spitting in that post you linked to. Must have been having a bad day. I still think Meche is more likely to be a bad signing than a good one, but it's hard for me to connect to both the certainty and the emotion I had before. I was having kind of a tough time with baseball right around then I guess.

  • I don't know about that, but given that the Antonetti campaign was well underway at that point, it would be understandable.

Anyway, I still stand by all that stuff I said. To me, the Zito contract is worse than the Meche contract.

  • Did I ever disagree with that? I hope not. The Zito contract is definitely worse (as was the Juan Pierre contract and a bunch of others). I don't like the Meche contract, but it's not crippling...except maybe to a small team that spends a bunch of a not-that-good SP and then doesn't raise it's payroll. I stand by saying that KC will regret that signing unless they're willing to really start committing a bunch of a extra cash to that team.
